When Shamu was six years old, he ate socks and developed a life-threatening intestinal blockage. He required emergency surgery. Thankfully, he recovered well — but our challenges were far from over.
Following the surgery, Shamu developed an extremely rare complication. Fibrosis formed at the surgical site and progressively narrowed his intestine. He eventually needed a second surgery to remove a portion of his intestine.
Once again, Shamu fought his way back.
But then the fibrosis returned.
After consulting with multiple surgeons, we decided to take a different surgical approach to help prevent the complication from happening again. Shamu endured yet another major procedure — and, just as he had done so many times before, he recovered.
Later in life, Shamu developed bloat and required another surgery.
By then, he had faced more medical challenges than most dogs ever will. He had endured pain, procedures, complications, and uncertainty. Yet somehow, through it all, Shamu never lost his spirit.
He continued to love. He continued to enjoy life. And he continued to be the happy, joyful dog we knew and cherished.
Shamu lived a comfortable and beautiful life until he was 13 years old.
He taught me the meaning of resilience. He taught me the power of hope. And he showed me how much a dog can endure while still giving love so freely.
When I look back on his journey, I think about the surgeries and the difficult decisions. I think about the uncertainty and the fear that comes with caring for a beloved animal facing serious medical challenges. But more than anything, I think about what Shamu taught me.
Why this foundation exists
Shamu's story stayed with me. For years, I knew I wanted to do something meaningful in his honor — something that could help other dogs and the families who love them. After years of building my career in veterinary medicine, I am now ready to take that step.
This foundation is dedicated to supporting dogs with complex medical needs and helping families who are struggling to provide the care their pets desperately need.
I know how overwhelming these situations can be. I know the fear of not knowing what comes next. And I know how much hope, compassion, and expert care can mean during the most difficult moments.
Shamu's story is the heart of this foundation. He endured so much, yet he never stopped being the loving, joyful dog we cherished. He gave us 13 beautiful years — and left behind a legacy that continues to inspire me every day.
My hope is that this foundation can give other dogs the same fighting chance Shamu had — to heal, to thrive, and to live happy, meaningful lives.
